The article considers the novel by Hilary Mantel Beyond Black from the point of view of modern theory of traumatic experience. The relationship between violence, injuries caused by it, and memory is one of the main topics of discussion in modern cultural studies and continuously attracts the attention of authors of fiction. Since the 1990s, both theorists and writers have been considering trauma in connection with historical or political issues (history trauma, terrorism). This article examines how the heroine of the novel deals with the children's traumatic experiences of violence and pain. The author’s strategies for the studies of the mechanisms of memory and compensation in the consciousness of the heroine are also considered. Particular attention is paid to the problem of memory and its connection with corporeality. The main result of the research is the conclusion about the changed function of the «traumatic» perspective in the literature of the 21st century.
