This article examines the direct influence of sovereignty on the fate of modern unrecognized states on the example of the proclamation of Kosovo's independence. This principle allows states to recognize other countries at their own will, while being an obstacle to the development of criteria for recognition. At the same time, sovereignty is an indispensable principle for unrecognized countries, since it ensures the effectiveness of the newly formed state and allows it to count on recognition in principle. The article discusses the possibilities for developing common criteria for the recognition of states.
