The article discusses the main points of view on the basis of the classification of forensic examinations, in the context of their development, shows the criteria for classifying examinations to certain classes. It is noted that the criterion of separation by proximity of branches of the used special knowledge does not always accurately characterize the classes of forensic examinations. In conclusion, based on the analysis of several classes (computer, speech, molecular genetic, substances, materials and products), proposals are made to improve the classification of forensic examinations.
