The motif of «mystery» and its specific reflection in the German literary Biedermeier is considered both in the novel «The Monk» by the famous English pre-Romantic writer M.G. Lewis and the short story «Beautiful Abigail» by P. Heyse. Mysterious, as a typologically relevant and dominant motif in the Gothic genre, becomes a conventional literary device in Biedermeier literary works. It contributes to the creation of a special emotional atmosphere with the aim of maximizing the impact on the reader without going beyond the realistic perception of the world.
