The article analyzes the principles of artistic realization of the mythological city in the stories of M. Frei. The object of the study is Echo - a city from a parallel world, the existence of which the protagonist gets to know from dreams. The fact that the events of the stories take place in the urban space, and the central figure - Sir Max - is a collective image of a city dweller, who is distinguished from any inhabitant of the Earth only by the presence of magical skills, allows attributing Max Frei's works to urban fantasy. The analysis shows that in these stories the creative rethinking of the mythologeme of the city creates a literary image that possesses the archetypal features of paradise: accessibility only for the selected group, concern for the population's well-being and constant entertainment, fulfillment of the inhabitants' hidden and obvious desires.
