The article examines the gender aspect of religious problems in Kate Chopin’s short story «Two Portraits» (1895). The main element that provides the basis for the plot of the story is the variability of the end. The hero of the story appears in two images: of the wanton and of the nun. Particular attention is given to the peculiarities of the feminine religious consciousness. The author comes to the conclusion that in her artistic search and women’s theme interpretation Chopin anticipated the aesthetics and narrative techniques of the mid-20th century.
