Abstract
The authors examine the main foreign policy strategies in the Middle East and South Mediterranean of president Charles de Gaulle and presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy who are often considered to be neoGaullists. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the main vector of foreign policy in the region, the development of the relations mainly with Arab states, main suppliers of petrol, was formed by the founder of the Gaullist movement. Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy also continued this strategy, trying to develop the relations with Israel, searching for solutions for the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Syria-Lebanon problem, strengthening the influence of France in the Mediterranean region. Nevertheless, not all the initiatives that have been launched by them produced the desired results.
