The article presents an analysis of main tendencies of studying John of Salisbury’s «political philosophy» in western historiography of the second half of the 20th century. John of Salisbury (1115/1120-1180), an outstanding English diplomat, thinker and writer, was one of the most brilliant representatives of the «Renaissance of the twelfth century» and an author of fundamental treatises - «Policraticus, sive de nugis curialium et vestigiis philosophorum», «Metalogicon», «Entheticus», «Historia pontificalis».
