The body of Russian memoir literature and diaries describing the Mediterranean expedition led by D.N. Senyavin is considered in the context of social and ideological changes of the early 19th century. For this purpose, we use A. Martin's hypothesis on the crisis of the old family model during the period of modernization initiated by the state. As a result, new models of social relations were developed in practice and presented in the literature. One of the romantic versions of the new community was «the brotherhood of seamen» which became the leitmotif of the expedition members' memoirs. In turn, the image of Senyavin was created according to the pattern of the «good father», who earned his authority by his wisdom and care. This pattern was extended both to officers and sailors as well as to the Slavic population of the Balkan Peninsula with whom the troops under his command made contact. As a result, «the brotherhood of seamen» became the prelude to the adoption of the idea of «Slavic brotherhood».
