Using the materials related to the biography of the Zurich burgomaster Hans Waldmann, we consider the perception of the public death penalty in the late Middle Ages. The main discrepancies between the circumstances of Waldmann's execution and traditional patterns of attitude towards the convicts sentenced to death are revealed. Particular attention is given to the metaphor of the social body and the role of ideas derived from this metaphor in a specific historical and cultural situation. |
