Some features of the socio-economic and legal status of the Jews of central Russia in the second half of the 19th - early 20th century are considered. Their professional structure, level of knowledge of the Russian language, as well as their relationship with the surrounding population are analyzed. Legal acts restricting their freedom of movement throughout the country, and ways of implementing these acts by local authorities are examined. The study is based on the materials of the Ryazan province as a typical region of central Russia.
