For the first time, an attempt is made using the Nizhny Novgorod material to trace the modification of the museum as a cultural form in the new historical conditions. On the example of provincial community halls of the Nizhny Novgorod province, qualitative changes in the work of museums in the 1917-1920s are considered: new topics in the dialog with the population, the exacerbation of difficulties in everyday life, mobilization and arrests of employees. The Appendix contains some archival documents pertaining to these events, including a note written by the famous pedagogue E.N. Medynsky.
