We examine the autobiographical novella by E.T.A. Hoffmann «The Entailment» where the writer’s youth memories are reflected. Through the plot situations connected with the history of baron R’s family and the castle of Rossiten’s fall, the author reflects on the mystery of human life cycle. By using this approach, it is possible to understand the peculiarities of poetic manner of the German romanticist that are determined by the entwinement of the reality and supernatural phenomena in his fictional world.
