In this article, we examine the works of the American writer H.S. Thompson in the context of the principles of New Journalism and consider some peculiarities of his own author's method designated by him as Gonzo journalism. A comparative analysis of H.S. Thompson's method with the method of New Journalists is carried out. Some similarities in their methods (e.g., a great variety of literary techniques used in the text) are revealed. H.S. Thompson claimed through his works his unique author’s vision of writing, which includes much more attention to meta-textuality (for example, the method of working with the material and its influence on the reader) and the individual elements in each specific text. As a conclusion, it is stated that Gonzo journalism can be considered as an extension of the New Journalism tradition, as well as an independent concept that summarizes the writer's life-creation principles.
