The article considers the problem of classical antiquity reception in the context of historical and literary process of Germany, based on the material of the German drama of the 1830s-1870s. We analyze some of the most common ancient plots in the philosophical and aesthetic system and literary practice of the German writers and identify the groups of plots that are most characteristic of this period's dramatic art. Using the structural and descriptive method and the cultural and historical approach, we arrive at the conclusion that classical antiquity plots and images in the German dramatic art of 1830s-1870s function as historical, ethical and aesthetic markers.
