The article discusses the role of volunteer non-profit organizations performing human rights defense functions. The status of non-profit organizations in the system of human rights activities is controversial, due to the ambiguous history of such organizations. Issues of legislative regulation and law enforcement practice in relation to such organizations require a detailed study. Volunteer organizations can be subjects of human rights activities and should be included in the human rights system of society as one of its elements to ensure legal protection of the individual.
