The subject of the paper is the symbolic component of the concept of trud and its changes from the Old Russian period to the 20th century. The methods of the Petersburg school of conceptology and historical lexicology are used. The word trud is analyzed with the help of lexical-semantic description of the concept name, its derivatives and synonyms. We have established the continuity of the cultural meaning from the Old Russian language to modern Russian: the synonymous pair trud i podvig - the syntactic construction podvig truda - the syntactic construction trudovoy podvig . It is concluded that the symbolic meaning of ‘hard work - being closer to God’ has been transformed in the history of the Russian language into the symbolic meaning of ‘hard work - civic dignity’.
