Abstract
Semantic analysis of the concept religio makes it possible to highlight a number of characteristic features of Roman religiosity. It shows that the various aspects, modes and acts of communication between humans and gods, from the Roman point of view, were inextricably linked to each other and to the legal institutions of civitas , and did not have an individualizing orientation implying an individual's personal relationship with a deity. In their semantic implications, as well as in specific contexts and assessments of the Roman authors, the concept religio correlated with moral values, but was originally related to those unconscious taboos that were always preserved, to some extent or other, in the Roman religion and were embedded into everyday practices and always remained inseparable from the «materialistic» aspects of the ritual. It is in this strict ritualism, rather than in revelation or hesychasm, that the pious Romans saw the main way of keeping in touch with the deity.
