The article presents a brief analysis of the informal traditions that existed in military schools of the Russian Empire in the 19th and in the early 20th century. Their general characteristics are given, a general classification of the informal traditions of the cadet corps according to several criteria is proposed. The authors point out that the existence of various unofficial traditions and certain forms of their manifestation are not the product of the domestic system of military education, but characteristic of almost all closed-type educational institutions of the period under study. The groups of main and supplementary factors that influenced the emergence of unofficial traditions in military educational institutions and their changes over time are identified. A significant impact of informal traditions on the internal life of military education institutions and the process of formation of the Russian officer's personality is noted. The results of the analysis can be used in the systematization of the informal traditions of closed educational institutions of the past and present.
