The authors present their analysis of the use of trace evidence in crime detection and in the investigation of criminal cases. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the results of the use of trace evidence are insufficient. To increase the efficiency of the forensic departments, an approach is proposed that takes into account a wider use of video surveillance systems in large cities. We consider the main activities in using special knowledge when working with recordings from video surveillance cameras. A new type of forensic reporting based on the provisions of habitoscopy is proposed. To implement the proposed innovations, changes and additions are formulated that need to be made to departmental regulations.
