The article examines the functions of the conjunction ЕСЛИ (IF) in strong positions in literary works. The aim of this research is to demonstrate that such textual positions as the beginning, ending and title (performing the universal role in actualizing the author’s idea) intensify the grammatical meaning of the conditional conjunction and contribute to expanding its functional purpose. In our study, we use the descriptive method with elements of interpretive analysis and the method of direct linguistic observation. Our analysis shows that the conjunction ЕСЛИ causes the reader's interest primarily by the alternative in predicting of what would happen if the events turn this or that way. Every time, the reader has to conjecture the continuation of non-verbalized components. Semantic and connotative increments which the conjunction acquires in strong textual positions are important components of the author’s individual system of meanings. Thus, the function word that has a service role from the point of view of grammar turns out to be an artistically significant element in the interpretation of the in-depth content of a literary work.
