Abstract
Based on three texts describing major military campaigns that took place in 350-378, this paper examines how military events at the Rhine frontier of the late Roman Empire were presented in panegyrics. The analysis of the logic of cause and effect used by panegyrists in describing the events of military history and of the set of arguments and terms (ethnic and geographical names) in these panegyrics shows that their authors often constructed (invented) false reasons and results of many military events and exaggerated the geographical scope (the territory) of the Emperor’s victories.
