The paper covers the problems of proverb’s meaning actualization in everyday conversation based on the communicative episode from the text of fiction. The aim of the research is to analyze the semantics and pragmatics of proverbs in fictitious discourse imitating everyday talk. The method of cognitive discourse analysis of proverb’s meaning actualization in the context is used. The language and speech material is taken from the book by Paulo Coelho «By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept» . The authors come to the conclusion that proverbs in a discourse are mostly used as indirect speech acts and change their pragmatic function from constative to regulative. Besides, they are always used as tactical means of the speaker's communicative strategy.
