This article analyzes the existing views on the structure of ergonyms and some peculiarities of using the term «ergonym» in relation to a specific language material. Ergonyms of Nizhny Novgorod are used as an illustrative material. The aim is to justify the need to understand ergonyms in a broad and narrow sense. In the analysis of the material, we use the descriptive research method. It is proposed to use the term «functionality» to denote the component of the ergonym that names the field of the organization's activities.
