The paper examines the main economic activities of the newly created Volga shipping companies during the management reorganization in the system of the People's Commissariat for Water Transport in 1934. It is noted that the reorganization in the system of the Volga river fleet caused great difficulties in the work of Volga shipping companies. The financial situation of all Volga shipping companies by the end of 1934 was unsatisfactory. We have established the main causes of the losses sustained by the Volga water transport.
