The article describes the most important milestones in the historical process of collecting works of German painting, graphic art and sculpture in Russia and understanding of German art culture as one of the manifestations of intercultural dialogue in the 18th - early 20th centuries. Two stages of this process have been identified. The views of Russian writers, publicists and art historians of the 19th - early 20th centuries on German fine art, primarily the Renaissance, are examined. The importance of the publications by P.P. Gnedich, A.N. Benois, A.A. Sidorov and their contribution to the development of the studies of Germany's art history in Russia is emphasized.
