In this article, we explore the sociolinguistic «friend-foe» identification as a factor that influences the linguistic choice in the bilingual situations of Northern India and Catalonia. The analysis of the statistical data about the 16- 35 years old focus group allows us to conclude that the correlation between the factor and the language choice really exists and the grade of such correlation depends on the importance of this factor of identification according to the region. In Northern India, language choice is related to the person's social status and is less motivated by the «friend-foe» factor than Catalonia where the connection between the factor and the language choice is caused by the national component.
