This article presents an analysis of the main stages in the development of Turkish-German relations and their coverage in Turkish historiography. Special emphasis is given to the views of the Turkish professor, former Foreign Minister and Prime Minister of Turkey A. Davutoglu, presented in his monograph «Strategic Depth». The problem-solving and chronological approach allowed us to concentrate on the individual determining stages of Turkish-German interaction, and also provided an opportunity to analyze the sources and historiography of the problem in the sequential course of the transformation of bilateral relations. The development of bilateral contacts after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 is examined in detail. It is concluded that the overcoming of mutual distrust and the success achieved by Turkey in the EU accession issue in the early 2000s, when A. Merkel came to power and offered a privileged partnership for Turkey in the EU, led to a number of controversial points in the bilateral dialogue, which were aggravated by domestic political instability in Turkey, developments in the Middle East and, ultimately, resulted in a crisis in the bilateral relations.
