The article is based on the documents of the American and Polish diplomacy, as well as the memoirs of political figures. It examines the organization, course and results of the first-ever visit of US Vice President Richard Nixon to Poland. This event played a significant role in the history of the Polish-American relations of the Cold War period and had a great influence on the formation of American policy towards the countries of Eastern Europe. The author made an attempt to describe in detail the range of problems that were the subject of discussion during a personal meeting between Nixon and Gomu?ka. This approach allows a better understanding of the nature of relations between the two countries in the period under study.
