The article examines the process of the formation of church districts in Russia, in particular, the ways of their development from the bishopric to the diocese. Novgorod was chosen as an example of such an evolution. Based on annalistic sources, the processes of the formation of diocesan borders, the internal division into church districts, governing bodies and canonical subordination to the Novgorod bishops of the secular and monastic clergy are analyzed. As a result of the study, the author identifies the periods and substantiates the principles of the development of the Novgorod see. Until the end of the 11th century, it was a Christian mission supported by the princely authority. By the middle of the XII century, the episcopal structure took shape. By the 1230s, the general features of the diocesan system were formed.
