The article presents the initial stage of research of semantic content and semantic volume of the concept «udacha» («luck») in the Russian language picture of the world. The aim of the work is to determine the cognitive characteristics of the concept «udacha» («luck») on the basis of the analysis of lexicographic definitions of the lexemes udacha (luck) and udavat’sya / udat’sya ( to succeed ) as main representatives of the concept. Subsequently, these characteristics will serve to verify and specify the lexicographic data by means of the analysis of language and text objectification of the concept in other sources. The research is based on theoretical principles of analyzing the “language of culture” as an ethno-specific model of language conceptualization of the world. The methods of the linguistic-cognitive analysis of cultural concepts elaborated by scientists of Volgograd, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod and Tambov scientific schools are applied in the work. The research materials are the data from the main Russian explanatory dictionaries. Ten cognitive characteristics of the concept «udacha» («luck») are revealed in research process: these characteristics can be considered as a nucleus of the conceptual content for this concept.
