The article analyzes the precedent phenomena used by A.N. Ostrovsky in his drama «The Storm». Among these phenomena, the precedent texts occupy a special place. They include universal biblical texts of the Old and New Testament, as well as texts from Russian classical poetry and song lyrics. The song precedents are presented by both romances popular in the first half of the 19th century and folklore texts, including some samples and variations collected by the author during his ethnographic expedition along the Volga. The precedent phenomena perform the function of the plot driver that predetermine the tragic d?nouement of the drama. They correlate with key phraseological fields found in the text.
