The article presents the results of systematizing the cases of artificial usage of the kinship terms in the Old Russian Chronicles of the pre-Mongolian period, including those in relation to political allies, between the leaders of the two alliances in the conflict, in the period of peaceful interaction, etc. The application of the words father , brother , son when addressing political figures reflects dynamics and variability of the Old Russian social life and the general tendency towards constructing and strengthening horizontal ties. Judging by the texts available, many princes had their own personal habits regarding kinship terms usage: some used them very sparingly or, on the contrary, quite extensively, which gives us additional clues to reinterpreting the long studied conflicts of pre-Mongolian time.
