Abstract
Kinship relations occupy a significant place in Landn?mab?k and are represented, for the most part, in genealogical lists of highly formalized structure. A feature of the Landn?mab?k’s genealogy is the simultaneous proportional presentation of ascending and descending lines. Various designations of kinship also occur in the patronyms, matronyms and nicknames of the persons in Landn?mab?k . It seems quite possible to consider the latter as a variant of patronyms, where the father’s name is replaced by his status or famous nickname, since this type of a nickname fulfills the patronymic function, referring to the father and through him to the family of the nickname bearer via the common knowledge from the collective memory of Icelandic society. Moreover, while the early editions of Landn?mab?k created in the 13th and 14th centuries (i.e., Sturlub?k , Hauksb?k and the very fragmentally preserved Melab?k ) preserve the general narrative structure, there are textual differences, including those related to kinship. All early editions trace genealogies to the family of the author. At the same time, Hauksb?k is distinguished by the addition of several generations to genealogical lists and the adjustment of kinship degree. This not only shows the authors’ work on the editions, but also makes it possible to outline the source base of Landn?mab?k more clearly, and confirms the greater independence of Hauksb?k and the general reconstructed protograph of Sturlub?k and Melab?k .
