The article discusses the origin and historical stages of development of the state control and supervision function in the field of road transport and road management in the Russian Federation. In this work, we used theoretical research methods and historical and legal methods. The author focuses on a detailed study of the period associated with the gradual transfer of the above function from the country's road safety system to the special control and supervisory authority of the Russian Transport Inspectorate (RTI). Later, as a result of the administrative reform of the executive branch in 2004, the Federal Service for Transport Supervision (Rostransnadzor) was established as the successor of the Russian Transport Inspectorate. At present, the State Road Supervision (Gosavtodornadzor) as a structural division of Rostransnadzor successfully implements the function of state control and supervision in the field of road transport and road management on the territory of the Russian Federation.
