The article reveals the role of the UN in the observance of human rights in the Afghan armed conflict (1979-1989, with the participation of the USSR) in the second half of the 1980s. The basis for its writing served as UN documents. The first section of the article analyzes the reports submitted by the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights in 1985-1988 on respect for human rights in Afghanistan. In the second section, the author considers the resolutions of the UN General» Assembly «Question of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Afghanistan» adopted since 1985, and dwells on which UN member states and how they voted on these resolutions. According to the author, the reports of the Special Rapporteur and the resolutions of the UN General Assembly played a positive role, helping to draw the attention of the world community to the problem of observing human rights in Afghanistan, but this problem was not finally resolved.
