The article deals with the problem of interpretation of the image of leviathan in the Book of Job and critical literature in the linguo-hermeneutic aspect. The authors compare the ancient exegesis of this image, created by the Church Fathers, with the understanding of this image among Western researchers of the 19-20th century. The authors come to the conclusion that modern researchers: Rashi, G. Ewald, J. Barton, A. Clarke and others - limit the language embodiment of this complex image to only a naturalistic description, emasculating the religious content.
