The results of the analysis of varying terms used in the educational literature on the historical grammar of the Russian language are presented. The term «modification series of a term», a method of distinguishing between the core and non-core variants of one term, is proposed. The article substantiates the predominance of quantitative (with a different number of components), graphical (different use/non-use of quotation marks and numeric symbols) and positional (with different order of components) types in terms of educational texts.
