The article deals with the study of the investigative case of N.P. Sokolov (1890-1979). He was arrested in 1938 and spent four months in prison. The investigative file contains a lot of information about this episode of N.P. Sokolov’s biography of and his life before 1938. It follows from the file that N.P. Sokolov approved current activity of the Soviet government. He believed that the Empire was restored in the USSR. The article also represents a kind of reconstruction of N.P. Sokolov’s views on the imperial topics. After release from prison N.P. Sokolov became a historian, and his main work was devoted to the history of the (Venetian) Empire.
