The article examines the features of the semantic content and sense extension of the concept «brother» according to Russian lexicographic sources. The subject of the work is to determine the cognitive characteristics of the concept «brother» on the basis of the analysis of lexicographic definitions of the lexeme brother as main representative of the concept. The methods of the linguo-cognitive analysis of cultural concepts elaborated by scientists of Volgograd, Voronezh, Nizhni Novgorod and Tambov scientific schools are applied in the work. The research materials are the data of general Russian etymological and explanatory dictionaries. Seven cognitive characteristics of the concept «brother» are revealed in research process: these characteristics can be considered as a nucleus of the conceptual content for the concept «brother».
