Occasional word combinations are considered as one of the characterological means of L. Ulitskaya's individual author's style in her novel «Jacob's Ladder» and its translated German version. The purpose of this work is to determine the role of author's occasional word combinations in literary text, to interpret their connotative meanings and the possibility of translation. It describes the interrelation between methods of occasional word combinations translation, context, and background knowledge of the translator. The practical material obtained by the continuous sampling method is subjected to a thorough comparative linguistic analysis, contextual and interpretative analysis. It is concluded about the use of omission and lexical substitution as the most frequent ways of occasional word combinations translation and about the general neutralization of occasionality in the translated German text.
