This article examines the role of refraction of conventional symbol meaning in the formation of new interpretations of the artistic symbol. The main task of the present research is dedicated to the exposure of the multi-level units of speech of the characters of the novel by J. R. Fowles, in which the artistic symbol is formed throughout the whole narrative. As a result, stylistic peculiarities were found at all levels of the dialogue (lexical, phonetic, grammatical and syntactic). This study has a scientific novelty, as it studies the process of formation of new meanings in an artistic symbol with the help of linguistic means of communication.
