In the present paper we trace the transformation of perception of the domus concept in the Anglo-Saxon community by analyzing its existence in Venerable Bede?s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum , written in the VIIIth century, and in its translation into Old English (late IXth - early Xth centuries). Comparative study of the notion of domus specifies its semantic inflation, ideas of domus , its role in the life of an individual and a kin group and its functions. Special attention is paid to the modes of Latin terminology adaptation in order to convey this concept in Old English, and the influence of the authoritative Latin text on the Old English linguistic tradition.
