The paper deals with Tuscany of Trecento and early Quattrocento. The protagonist of the story is italian merchant, banker and sponsor of religious and charity institutions Francesco di Marco Datini. The archive of Datini includes private letters and official documentation, documents created by corporations, communities and city-dwellers, who were involved in the trade and production of the fabrics, but also the massive of correspondence from the members of the convents, par- ish churches and other religious institutions, mostly close to Franciscans of Toscana and those, who belonged to mendicant monastic orders. The author focused on the problems of identity, the types of religiosity, family situation and business activities’ of the merchant of Prato and on the role which played his spouse Margherita in his life.
