Abstract
Based on a comparative historical analysis of the «Heinskringla» by Snorri Sturluson and «The Saga of Knutlings», the dynastic struggle between King Harald III and king Svein II Estridsen for the possession of the Danish throne is considered. One of the most important aspects of the confrontation between the kings was that after the death of Danish king Hardeknud, the Knutling dynasty in the male line was crushed, and the question of the legitimate heir remained open. For a short time, Norwegian king Magnus the Good was the ruler of both kingdom, but after his death Norwegian king Harald entered the struggle with Svein for the Danish throne. Both of them used genealogy as one of the tool of the struggle. Thus, king Harald primarily emphasized his maternal kinship with king Olav the Saint while king Svein II referred in a similar way to his famous maternal ancestors from the Knutling’s dynasty.
