The purpose of the work is to analyze the semantic and stylistic features of the use of reduced vocabulary in the work of Mikhail Matusovsky. The material for the study was the writer's poetic and prose works created at different times. In the process of analyzing the semantic and stylistic features of the reduced lexical units, methods of analysis, comparison, generalization were used. The lexicographic base of the work was the explanatory dictionaries of the Russian literary lan- guage, slang vocabulary, etymological dictionaries. The stylistic marking of the reduced lexical units used in literary texts has been established. Conclusions are drawn about the functions of reduced vocabulary in the works of Mikhail Matusov- sky. The main ones are: imparting expressiveness to the statement / narration, realistic reflection of events, speech charac- teristics of the character, explication of a negative attitude to the described events or objects, creation of a cultural and social picture of the era.
