The article analyzes thematic composition and semantics of lexemes named women in the "Explanatory dictionary of the living great Russian language" by V.I. Dahl. The studied vocabulary contains names of women distinguished by age, family relations, position in society, occupation, characteristics of behavior, character, appearance. Most of the words have single-root correlates in vocabulary named men, but not all feminitives are derived from the corresponding mascu- line words. Nominations of women on the basis of appearance, behavior and character often have expressive and estima- tive meanings that reveal gender stereotypes of the Russian language model of world in the 19th century.
