The article deals with the problematic issues of the development of forensic handwriting examination, which consist in the difficulties of implementing diagnostic studies. These studies include the possibility of establishing the gender, age, physical and mental state of the performer at the time of writing, and some properties, qualities and features of the writer. Unfortunately, the methods for determining these parameters were developed in the last century and were not seriously changed, and, as the authors of some methods point out, they give a probabilistic result, that is, an approximate one, which allows for the possibility of an erroneous result of the study. In practice, mainly in civil cases, handwriting examination is assigned to establish the gen- der of the writer. In judicial handwriting there are two methods of determining the writer’s gender: by high-skilled writing and medium-skilled writing. The modified method of determining the writer’s gender is based on the average handwriting which used much more often in practice. This method has a number of disadvantages that significantly reduce the efficiency and ac- curacy of its application. To solve the problems, we propose an improvement of some provisions of the modified method, the content and approbation of which are described in this research paper.
