The authors analyze the methodological problems of studying the intelligentsia in modern Russian science. The article pays special attention to the developments of the scientific school under the guidance of ProfessorV.S. Memetov at Ivanovo State University. At the same time, the considerations of the St. Petersburg researcherSokolov, including his "formula of intelligence", are critically analyzed. The authors also pay considerable attention to the methodological research of the St. Petersburg scientist V.S. Volkov and his proposals for achieving universality in the interpretation of the phenomenon of intelligentsia. The authors place special emphasis on the difficulties and problems in scientific research on the subject of the intelligentsia.
