The article presents the experience of analyzing linguistic means used to create images of some heroes of the epic novel by A.I. Solzhenitsyn's «Red Wheel» The characterization is based on the scheme proposed by Yu.D. Apresyan, and supplemented by the selection of means that reveal the procedural and non-procedural characteristics of the person, developed by S.V. Chernova. The author does not give a detailed portrait description, but reveals the personality through an internal monologue, motives of activity, speech behavior, psycho-emotional and intellectual state of the characters. Particular attention is paid to the images of historical figures, in particular, the article presents a comparative characteristic of the linguistic means of creating images-antipodes of Emperor Nicholas II and the revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, which researchers rightly attribute to the semantic poles of the narrative. The data obtained make it possible to draw conclusions about the author's idiostyle and reveal the essential features of the heroes.
